Welcome to Canby Historical Society
Mission Statement
The Canby Historical Society preserves our rich heritage and inspires an appreciation and understanding of Canby area history.
Visit us Thursday - Sunday from 1 pm until 4 pm
I am sure you have read of the financial problems that some of our Historical Museums and Cultural Centers are experiencing during these rough economic times. Attendance is down, Grant opportunities have been cut sharply and a decrease in financial resources have forced some of them to close their doors or cut their hours drastically. It is not only a sad state of affairs for these museums but also for visitors who are deprived of cultural, historical and educational experiences offered by these institutions. That is the bad news. The good news is that Canby Historical Society has yet to experience any of those trials and tribulations. Granted, attendance at our Depot Museum could be improved, our membership could be increased and our bottom dollar could have a few more zeros added on, but let me assure you, Canby Historical Society continues to weather the economic storm and this is helped by a number of factors.
First, we have a fiscally responsible Board of Directors, and they have been able to take advantage of Grant opportunities in recent years with those funds going entirely for improvements to our Museum. I think the community is well aware of our hard work, which brings me to the second factor:
Canby is blessed with an abundance of community spirit, and its businesses and citizens help support local civic and non-profit organizations through their volunteerism and financial support. Our Historical Society is appreciative of the support we've received from the community throughout our existence, and their involvement in our success brings me to, I believe, the most important factor:
Volunteers make it all work! Herman Bergman, one of our founding members of CHS, stated it accurately in a memoir he wrote some years ago, and it is as true today as it was back then: "Canby Historical Society will continue as long as we actively solicit and recruit volunteers and Historical Society members to become the present and future possible managers of your Historical Society and Museum." I may be biased but I think we have the best volunteers around and we can't thank them enough for their hard work and dedication to our Museum, fund raisers and promotional activities.
Please continue to support Canby Historical Society through your membership and volunteerism. Enjoy our Website and take a tour of our Depot Museum -- it is always a work-in-progress!
