CANBY HISTORICAL SOCIETY CELEBRATES "100 YEARS OF SCOUTING"

The Boy Scouts of America was incorporated on February 8, 1910 by William D. Boyce. Pioneers of the program conceived of outdoor adventures that developed skills in young boys and gave them a sense of enjoyment, fellowship, and a code of conduct for everyday living. Character development, citizenship training, and personal fitness are the "aims of scouting".

Please join us as we pay tribute to our own local Scouts with our very own display of "10 Years of Scouting". Ed Holbrook, CHS member and long time Scout Leader, has put together an extraordinary and historical display of Scouting memorabilia at the Depot Museum.

Ed will be taking us on a personal guided tour of these treasures on Tuesday, March 16th at 7 pm. If you are unable to attend this program, the will be on display until the end of the year. Please make every attempt to view this remarkable collection while it is available.

VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION!

The Canby Historical Society celebrated its very special volunteers during and appreciation night on November 17th, 2009. This event was very well attended and it gave us a chance to say "thank you" to the people who have helped us throughout the year. Some of these dedicated people have worked behind the scenes at our annual pancake breakfast, others have helped with school children during our 3rd grade tours, and many others have lent a hand to work on repairs, maintenance, or any other needs at hand.

In addition to tasty appetizers and beverages, each volunteer was presented with a certificate of appreciation. They also received a package of life savers, which signified how we view and appreciate our volunteers. They are truly our "life savers" and we value each and every one of them. We plan to make this an annual event and look forward to seeing many of you there this year!

NEW DISPLAY GIVES MUSEUM A FACELIFT

The largest change in the history of the museum has been completed. Patrick Harris, Curator of the Aurora Colony Museum, was hired with a grant to make suggestions to improve our exhibits. Now, a year later, the transformation is finished. A mega poster of a 1910 view of our Depot greets visitors a they enter the front room of our museum. Among the most dramatic changes is a 40' long permanent time line, professionally painted, that details Canby area history. In addition, a 9' commissioned mural depicting local historic scenes has been placed on the back wall of our model train exhibit case.

Another project which was funded through a grand has been completed. An interactive grinding wheel, reminiscent of pioneer days, grinds corn and other grains into flour is now in operation at the museum. This will be used in our annual 3rd grade tours in conjunction with our antique corn sheller which removes kernels from a dried corn cob. We have also created a new reference room for anyone interested in researching Canby history, and update wall exhibits.

CHS WELCOMES NEW BOARD MEMBER

Catherine Davis attended Canby Schools and lives in Canby with her husband Tim. Catherine is a travel agent and with her husband opened Canby Travel in 1977. Before moving back to Canby she and her husband lived in a quite a few different places, including Alaska and Germany. Her love of travel has kept her in same business throughout her life.

Like many of us, she remembers when Canby was small and the phone numbers only had four digits. Her parents, Gordon and Agatha Andrus, built and operated Canby Frozen Food Lockers where she worked with her sisters.

We look forward to working with Catherine this coming year, and we think it will be a great one. Welcome Catherine!
