Our National Bouquet
Our flower maps were commissioned by the United States Flower Map Company, which was incorporated March 10, 1911. There were six original incorporators, all from Canby: A.W. Butterfield, O.R. Mack, J.E. Sutherland, John Eid, H.K. Stogsdill, and W.H. Bair. Stock was offered at $5 per share. Mr. Butterfield held 9,000 shares of stock and Oramel Roscoe Mack held the remaining 3,000 shares..President, A.W. Butterfield had spent two years in research to establish the identity of the appropriate flower for each of the 46 states and three territories, and in 1910 he obtained a private copyright. Ohio artist N.B. Crabbe did art work for the map and 10,000 copies were published by the Ketterlinus Litho Manufacturing Co. of Philadelphia in 1911. Maps were offered at $2.50 each, but only a few thousand were sold before World War I; the remaining maps were stored in wood crates in the attic of the W.H. Bair Warehouse for years. The remaining maps were given to Canby Historical Society shortly after its incorporation in 1968. The flower maps are in color and lithographed on a satin-finish muslin material. The year 2011 marks the 100th anniversary of the flower map.
