Volunteers The Canby Historical Society is always looking for people to volunteer in many aspects of collections, fundraising, grand writing and displays. Our 40th Anniversary! Councilman Randy Carson read a Proclamation from the City of Canby's Mayer Melody Thompson pictured to the left with Cheryl Rahn, which proclaimed May 20th as Canby Historical Day in Canby. "Somewhere in Time" provided their vocal entertainment. After the short program, everyone celebrated with cake, punch, coffee, champagne and camaraderie. Happy 40th to CHS!!!
President’s Corner The sun is finally shining and things are happening at the Canby Depot Museum. In March, we held our semi-annual flea market and had a record breaking crowd. It seems like everyone is looking for a bargain these days. Most of the vendors and all the customers had smiles on their faces as they left at the end of the day. During April we were busy finding new photos to be used in our 2009 calendar. Watch for some new and exciting things next year. May 20th brought our 40th Birthday Celebration. All of the partiers celebrated with cake, punch, coffee and champagne. A great time was had by all for this momentous occasion. Also in May, we hosted 300 of Canby's finest 3rd grade students who study local history and get a first hand look when they tour our museum. This is a huge project and requires many volunteer hours to be successful. Sue Carson did a wonderful job of organizing the tours this year. She was primarily assisted by Andrea Wilson and Sharon Henry. There were many other volunteers and they are mentioned in Sue's article. Thanks to each and everyone of them for making it such a great event.Soon it will be the 4th of July and with it comes our annual pancake breakfast. This year we will be renaming the breakfast as the Herman Bergman Memorial Pancake Breakfast in to tribute to him. We hope to see all of you at this event. Have a great summer and stop by the depot museum to say hello and to see what is new! Cheryl Rahn, President Canby Historical Society Hosts 3rd Grade Visits!

The missing years are as follows: Pre-1918, 1924-1926, 1928-1935, 1948-1949, 1958 & 1991. Special Thanks to: Irva Graham for her wonderful program on the history of the Needy area. Teresa Blackwell and her sister Vicky for their spinning demonstrations during the school tours. Mike Mayes for his commitment to providing taping of our programs to be aired on Channel 5. We appreciate his time and dedications to this project. Share Your Story With Us Oral History - what seem uninteresting and mundane to you is priceless to your loved ones and friends. CHS would like to record your life story for our Oral History Collection. We are in the process of digitizing our cassette recordings for computer storage, and the material will soon be available for historical value and research. If you, a friend or family member would like to share a bit of your life with us, we can arrange a convenient time at your home or here at the Depot Museum. It will only take a few hours for a lifetime of memories! These Oral Histories are also stored on CDs and are available for sale. Watch for Our Fall Flea Market The Canby Historical Society's Fall Flea Market is coming up soon! This year it will be hosted at the Clackamas County Fair Grounds on October 18th, 2008 from 9 am to 3 pm. We are currently accepting vendors, so give us a call at 503-266-6712 if you are interested.
