Our 40th Anniversary!

Canby Historical Society celebrated its 40th birthday in grand fashion on Tuesday, May 20th 2008. A short program was presented by Nora Clark who shared her memories of her dad, John Neiland, along with Herman Bergman and Viola Mack who organized CHS. Long time board member, Wayne Guild, shared a story and photo of the original members, Harold Oathes.

Councilman Randy Carson read a Proclamation from the City of Canby's Mayer Melody Thompson pictured to the left with Cheryl Rahn, which proclaimed May 20th as Canby Historical Day in Canby. "Somewhere in Time" provided their vocal entertainment. After the short program, everyone celebrated with cake, punch, coffee, champagne and camaraderie. Happy 40th to CHS!!!

President’s Corner

The sun is finally shining and things are happening at the Canby Depot Museum. In March, we held our semi-annual flea market and had a record breaking crowd. It seems like everyone is looking for a bargain these days. Most of the vendors and all the customers had smiles on their faces as they left at the end of the day.

During April we were busy finding new photos to be used in our 2009 calendar. Watch for some new and exciting things next year. May 20th brought our 40th Birthday Celebration. All of the partiers celebrated with cake, punch, coffee and champagne. A great time was had by all for this momentous occasion. Also in May, we hosted 300 of Canby's finest 3rd grade students who study local history and get a first hand look when they tour our museum. This is a huge project and requires many volunteer hours to be successful. Sue Carson did a wonderful job of organizing the tours this year. She was primarily assisted by Andrea Wilson and Sharon Henry. There were many other volunteers and they are mentioned in Sue's article. Thanks to each and everyone of them for making it such a great event.

Soon it will be the 4th of July and with it comes our annual pancake breakfast. This year we will be renaming the breakfast as the Herman Bergman Memorial Pancake Breakfast in to tribute to him. We hope to see all of you at this event. Have a great summer and stop by the depot museum to say hello and to see what is new!

Canby Historical Society Hosts 3rd Grade Visits!

A personal favorite of ours is our annual Third Grade Tours of our Depot Museum and Caboose. This event is held throughout the month of May and this year over 300 students from Knight, 91, Eccles, Lee and Trost schools participated. Our Tour Guides, Andrea Wilson, our Museum Clerk, and Sharon Henry, a CHS member and volunteer, walked them through Canby and railroad history, explained some of our displays and the students experimented with our pump organ, rotary phone and manual typewriter, as well as climbing onto the Caboose cupola and speeder car. We were also very excited this year to have Teresa Blackwell with her sister Vicky make a return engagement with their spinning wheel demonstrations. It was all a big hit with the kids and CHS always welcomes the opportunity to participate in joint ventures with the schools. My very big thanks to Andrea Wilson and to volunteers, Sharon Henry, Teresa Blackwell and her sister Vicky, Lynn Holbrook, Gail Crawford, Barb Menkel, Carole Darling, Vicky Lang, Wayne Guild and Ken Daniels. You all made it special for these students!

Sue Carson, Third Grade Tour Coordinator

High School Yearbooks Wanted

The Canby Historical Society has a collection of Canby High School Yearbooks dating back to the year 1918.  We have some volumes missing from our collection and would appreciate   receiving them. You may drop them at the Depot Museum, or phone the museum and someone will arrange to pick it up. The missing years are as follows: Pre-1918, 1924-1926, 1928-1935, 1948-1949, 1958 & 1991.

Special Thanks to:

Irva Graham for her wonderful program on the history of the Needy area.

Teresa Blackwell and her sister Vicky for their spinning demonstrations during the school tours.

Mike Mayes for his commitment to providing taping of our programs to be aired on Channel 5. We appreciate his time and dedications to this project.

Share Your Story With Us

Oral History - what seem uninteresting and mundane to you is priceless to your loved ones and friends. CHS would like to record your life story for our Oral History Collection. We are in the process of digitizing our cassette recordings for computer storage, and the material will soon be available for historical value and research. If you, a friend or family member would like to share a bit of your life with us, we can arrange a convenient time at your home or here at the Depot Museum. It will only take a few hours for a lifetime of memories! These Oral Histories are also stored on CDs and are available for sale.

Watch for Our Fall Flea Market

The Canby Historical Society's Fall Flea Market is coming up soon! This year it will be hosted at the Clackamas County Fair Grounds on October 18th, 2008 from 9 am to 3 pm. We are currently accepting vendors, so give us a call at 503-266-6712 if you are interested.
