About Us

2009 marks the 41st anniversary of Canby Historical Society, which was incorporated on May 15, 1968, by John R. Nieland, Herman A. Bergman and Viola Mack. These long time citizens of the community had a strong insight and mission to gather and preserve materials relating to the history of Canby, Oregon. Within a year, the society received notice of its designation as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation. Canby Historical Society continues as an active civic organization and its members collect artifacts, photographs and stories on behalf of the society.

Mission Statement Adopted February 2002

The Canby Historical Society preserves our rich heritage and inspires an appreciation and understanding of Canby area history.

Objectives

  • To gather, preserve and make available a museum, records and other material relating to the history of Canby, Oregon and the area adjacent to Canby having natural, economic and cultural affinity.
  • To stimulate an interest in and knowledge of the locality's past.
  • To discover and/or collect any material which may help establish or illustrate the history of the Canby area.
  • To provide for the preservation of such material and for accessibility, as far as feasible, to all who wish to examine and study it.
  • To provide for the preservation of buildings, sites or monuments of historic interest.
  • To disseminate historical information and arouse interest in the past by publishing historical material, by holding meetings with addresses and lectures by sponsoring programs and by marking buildings, sites and monuments.
