Our Winter News Letter

President's Corner

It is hard to believe that summer is over but there is definitely a feeling of fall in the air. We had a very productive summer that included cooking breakfast for over 400 people on the 4th of July. It was a busy morning, but well worth the effort to see so many returning customers enjoying our good pancakes and sausage.

Wayne Guild was our host for an enjoyable Board Retreat at Nehalem Bay. We all had a great time and want to thank Wayne for the great accommodations. Our secretary, Barb Menkel, made a new friend. It seems that a friendly raccoon really enjoyed Barb's cooking as he dined on her goodies and left everything else.

Ken Daniels has stepped forward to be the chairman for the fall Flea Market. It will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2008 from 9 to 3 at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds. Be sure to come and shop for the holidays.

We will also be offering our St. Nick Day on Saturday, December 6. This includes a "free" picture for all kids and pets with St. Nick to take home. Be sure to come to the Depot for hot chocolate, candy canes, and that "free" photo for your Christmas cards to give to Grandma.

We will be electing new officers for 2009 in November, and in December we will host our annual Christmas party. Be sure to watch OCTS Channel 5 for upcoming programs sponsored by the Canby Historical Society. We are involved in a joint venture with OCTS and we are looking forward to bringing interesting programs to the airways. As you can see, there are many things happening at the Depot and we encourage you to attend all or some of them. We will look forward to seeing you soon.

Special Thanks To:

Mike Maze and Bob at OCTS Channel 5 for their assistance in training the CHS Board to tape programs and oral histories. Starting in October, these will be presented to the public. Thanks Mike and Bob for doing such a great job!

In Memoriam

Richard Brown passed away on September 24, 2008, at his home in Canby. He has been a teacher, coach, principal and superintendent in the Canby School District. A longtime volunteer and friend, he will be deeply missed. We are proud that Dick's oral history interview will be the first to be aired on Channel 5 in October. He will be missed.

Book Signing at Museum a Great Success

Former Canby resident and long-time Nike employee Geoff Hollister held a book reading and signing at the Depot Museum on July 24th, 2008. Hollister told his story of being Nike's #3 employee in the 1960's and his continued association with the famous shoe company. Hollister spoke to a full house, regaling them with stories ranging from the creation of the “swoosh” logo to his friendship with legendary Steve Prefontaine. Hollister also enjoyed seeing several of his old classmates from the class of '64.

Oral History Project

The Canby Historical Society is starting a partnership with OCTS Channel 5 to videotape our oral history interviews of local residents. We are proud to announce that we will begin our series with Dick Brown's interview. With his recent passing, this will be an emotional and heartwarming story for you to view. Please check the Canby Herald for air times during the month of October. We are excited to be able to tape these stories with the help of Mike Maze and his assistant, Bob, who are vital in putting together these programs.

The Looking Back Book

We are one of five local historical societies which have teamed together with the Canby Herald and the Wilsonville Spokesman to publish a hard-bound coffee table pictorial book, which captures the rich history of our area. The book is to feature more than 300 vintage photographs from Wilsonville, Canby, Aurora, Champoeg, and St. Paul; and will be published in conjunction with Oregon's 150th anniversary of statehood.

The Looking Back book is being published by Pediment Publishing Company, and will be available in late November. The Canby Historical Society has been working with Mick Scott of Marketing Communications Management of Wilsonville to include approximately 70 photographs with narratives of the Canby area.

The book may be pre-ordered at a cost of $29.95 for a single copy. Five or more copies to a single order will cost $24.00 per copy. Order forms are available at the Canby Depot Museum or at the Canby Herald office.

The Herman Bergman Memorial Pancake Breakfast

Our annual pancake breakfast on the 4th of July was probably the most successful one ever. We had perfect weather, great food, wonderful workers, and enthusiastic customers. Most importantly, we were able to honor the memory of one of our founding members, Herman Bergman, by naming the breakfast after him. Our doors opened at 7:00 am, and we had a steady stream of hungry people until 11:00 am. It was nice to see old friends and neighbors meet over a cup of coffee in the morning.

We were happy to provide our customers with the best local products from Fisher's Meats, Willamette Egg Farms, Cutsforth's Thriftway, Glenmore Farms, and Faist Farms. Of course we couldn't do it without the dependable crew of workers that show up every year to give us a hand. Without these people offering to help, there would be no breakfast.

We would like to give a huge thank you to the following volunteers: Tom Rahn, Steven Hagler, Wayne Guild, David Fuentez, Ron Bode, Frank Medford, Carl Mead, Dave Deering, Kurt Wade, Carl and Barbara Menkel, Carole Darling, Nora Clark, Jerry and Brenda Mootz, Paul and Gail Crawford, Jeanne Kraus, Jim Gibson, and Ed and Lynn Holbrook.

Another thanks to our servers: State Representative Wayne Scott, County Commissioner Bill Kennemer and Cherie Kennemer, Clackamas Community College Board Director Richard Oathes and his wife Kathy, Councilman Walt Daniels, Randy Carson, and Wayne Oliver.

Many thanks to all who helped and came to enjoy the breakfast and supported the Canby Historical Society. We hope to see you again next year!
