Welcome to Canby Historical Society
Mission Statement
The Canby Historical Society preserves our rich heritage and inspires an appreciation and understanding of Canby area history.
A Word From Our President Happy New Year and welcome to Canby Historical Society's Website! We are entering a brand new year and introducing a brand new look to our Website! We are fortunate to have on our Depot Museum staff, our very own Web Designer, Dawn Eleen. Dawn brought this Website from obscurity over a year ago to an exciting and informative site that will be of interest to anyone looking for Canby History, upcoming CHS events and information about our Depot Museum.
But before I let you go and explore our Website, I want to tell you a little about Canby Historical Society and give you an abbreviated rundown of our events and activities coming up in 2009. Canby Historical Society was formed in 1968 and we are the historical record for the City of Canby. Our Museum is housed in Oregon's oldest remaining train depot, and we are located adjacent to the Clackamas County Fairgrounds. Our holdings include memorabilia and artifacts from the early pioneer days to the present. Our photo archives hold 3200 vintage photographs and they are available for viewing and copying. Our Clerks, Andrea and Dawn, are available to give you tours of our Depot Museum and caboose. Come visit our Museum, because your travel through Canby History begins at the Depot!
CHS has an event-packed year on tap for 2009. Our semi-annual flea markets will be held on March 28 and October 17, in the main pavilion at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds, and they are always a big hit! Our Herman Bergman Memorial Breakfast is held on July 4, coinciding with Canby’s General Canby Day celebration. This event has been a tradition with CHS and becomes more popular every year. We added a new event, St. Nick Day, in 2007, and it promises to be a big event for us. Have your child or grandchild's picture taken with Santa, free of charge!
We offer public programs most months of the year that feature local citizens who've lived in the Canby area all their lives. Their life stories will take you back to simpler times and to an era when Canby was young. Oregon is celebrating its Sesquicentennial in 2009 and CHS will be involved in its celebration with our own historical activities and events.
There are so many other projects we're involved in -- Oral Histories, our Historical Calendar, photo books and Third Grade Tours -- I could recite so many other things, but I'll just let you look over our Website and read all about them. Be sure and check out our Calendar of events and read our on-line Newsletter. Its full of current events and CHS happenings.
Please consider becoming a member of Canby Historical Society. Our on-line membership form is available for printing, and you'll be helping our Organization preserve Canby's history for generations to come. And we're always in need of volunteers; it would be fun and challenging and you'd be working along side a great group of people!
Thanks for visiting our Website and have fun as you navigate your way through this virtual tour!!
